Dobbs appears to be the second-oldest barbecue restaurant in Alabama, opening in 1910 in Tallassee by Dobbs Jr.'s father, Euell Dobbs Sr. Dobbs Jr. said his father learned how to cut and cure barbecue meat at a Birmingham packing company where he started working at age 12.
Dobbs said the restaurant moved from Tallassee to Dothan in 1948. They moved to "the four-lane" – U.S. 231 – in 1958 and offered curb service until 1980.
The restaurant's history is part of the book,
"Alabama Barbecue: Delicious Road Trips," by Annette Thompson that was published last year. Dobbs said Dobbs Bar-B-Que is known for its barbecue more than anything but customer favorites include the hot dogs, camp stew, hickory smoked turkey salad and homemade strawberry shortcake. "I believe three things make a good restaurant: good food, good
service, and fair price," he said. "We have all kinds of customers who come for that, some visitors and some regulars. Some people, their great-grandad used to eat here."
Dobbs said longtime workers, such as Dobbs General Manager Jon Lindley, who has worked there for 35 years, add consistency to the Dobbs flavor
