This is manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work in Mosquito Control/Stormwater Maintenance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Cleans storm water facilities. Cuts weeds, cut and chips small trees, and bushes.  Removes aquatic plants. Removes spoils, beaver dams and other debris. Completes written daily accounting of cleaning activities and equipment used.

  • Maintains storm water facilities. Puts up erosion control devises. Repairs filters, headwalls, spillways, fencing, and fill and lay sandbags. Other activities include mowing, weeding, raking, fertilizing, and mulching. Completes written daily accounting of maintenance activities and equipment used.

  • Operates equipment. Drives dump truck and crew trucks. Operates bush chipper. Operates bushhog.  Operates slope mower and positract. Operates stump grinder.

  • Operates light equipment. Operates power mower, power pruner, weedeater, chainsaw, power packer, power auger, concrete mixer.

  • Use non-power equipment such as sling blades, shovel, rakes, bush axe, and post hole diggers.

OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIES

Maintains and repairs equipment. Oils mowers. Replaces mower and trailer tires when necessary. Repairs minor problems on equipment. Fuels and oils dump trucks and crew trucks. Greases backhoe, priestman, chipper, dragline.  

Serves as a lead worker.  Acts as lead worker. May substitute as a Non-DOC personnel Inmate Supervisor and/or supervisor for Community Service workers. Completes reports on work performed, material and equipment used by crew. Makes sure assigned tasks are completed safely. Assists in directing traffic for loading and unloading equipment.  Assists in securing and un-securing heavy equipment prior to and after transporting.

DIFFICULTY
The position adheres to established guidelines, policies, and operating procedures and must exercise care in operating equipment.

RESPONSIBILITY
Supervision Received
Duties are fairly specific.   Guidance is sought from supervisor concerning equipment failures and accidents. Employee refers to established manuals and guidelines.

Supervision of Others

This position may serve as a lead, serve in the absence of the supervisor, but does not serve as an immediate supervisor.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT

Contact is made with Purchasing and Fleet to pick up items purchased for jobs and to pick up and drop off vehicles, respectively.  Contact is made with citizens for basic informational exchange during work and to vendors to pick-up items purchased.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED

Examples of equipment used: Adding machine, vehicle, concrete mixer, pumps, chipper, crew truck, dump truck, stump grinder, pumps, bush hogs, slope mowers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Work is performed outdoors.   Work environmental factors include exposure to inclement weather conditions and various environmental factors and exposure to insects and animals.  Work requires extensive physical demands.   

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of reading, writing, and arithmetic.  
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of equipment assigned.
  • Knowledge of components, parts, operating principles and maintenance requirements of equipment assigned.
  • Basic mechanical skills (i.e. changing oil, lube, mix fuel oil etc).  
  • Knowledge of Florida Traffic laws.  
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.  
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.  
  • Ability to lift or push in excess of 50 pounds.  
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.  
  • Ability to maintain a courteous and professional demeanor while interacting with the public.  
  • Ability to drive equipment in heavy traffic.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Requires completion of the eighth grade and one year of similar or related work experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a Class “B” Temporary Driving Permit with an “N” endorsement at the time of hire.  
  • Must secure a Class “B” license with an “N” endorsement within 90 days of being hired or promoted.  
  • Must submit a Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Driver’s transcript at the time of hire or promotion.

FLSA STATUS:   Position is Non-exempt.  Analysis: this is manual and semi-skilled work primarily maintaining stormwater facilities and areas.
