Director - PSU Administrative Data Accelerator

The Evidence-to-Impact Collaborative within the Social Science Research Institute at Penn State University, University Park, is seeking applicants to direct the PSU Administrative Data Accelerator.

The Data Accelerator works across the university and with external partners to leverage government, industry, and practice data to advance the impact of applied computational social sciences on health and society. At its core, the Data Accelerator seeks to make science more impactful by increasing the use of data produced by the very systems we seek to improve (e.g., healthcare, criminal justice, child welfare, labor market, etc.)

This Director-level position will oversee unit operations and have the opportunity to lead an interdisciplinary group focused on improving research operations and conducting impactful science.

Education and Experience: Candidates should have a terminal degree at the time of hire in relevant areas of study (Social Sciences, Public Administration, or Information Sciences) (PhD) or Data Sciences (MS). Those applying with terminal master's degrees in the data sciences should have at least 3 years of applied experience with administrative data.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience using administrative data and interest in improving research infrastructure. This includes leadership in overseeing the management of sensitive data assets, in collaboration with partners conducting interdisciplinary research. The successful candidate for this role will be a self-directed, creative thinker who is able to strategically plan, build consensus, and problem solve to move work forward.

The successful candidate will also have the following:
  • Interest in being a leader in the use of administrative data to address pressing social issues
  • Ability to engage with key stakeholders (government, industry, & university) around data acquisition and data use agreements
  • Interest in organization building—including collaborating on external grant proposals and improving
  • Familiarity with database management and warehousing solutions (e.g., SQL, AWS, Snowflake)
  • Strong oral and written language communication -including experience writing grants and a scientific publications
  • Commitment to data privacy and security, as well as promoting equity, inclusion, and safety
  • Use of diplomacy and effective decision making to manage multiple competing priorities and perspectives
