DUS Academic Adviser

As one of the largest enrollment units for first- and second-year students at the Pennsylvania State University, the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) seeks a student-centered individual to join its academic advising program in an Academic Adviser position. We are looking for someone motivated to engage students in developing skills that allow them to explore and build meaningful academic goals for their undergraduate educations at Penn State. We are interested in individuals who understand a) the role of academic advising in promoting student success, b) the importance of building inclusive communities for students, c) how to leverage co-curricular involvement to aid exploration and increase students' sense of belonging, and d) the importance of being an engaged colleague and teammate.

The successful candidate(s), will:
  • serve as an assigned academic adviser and manage a roster of students.
  • develop relationships with advisees, helping to guide their search and choice of exploratory engagement, and monitor their academic progress.
  • serve as an adviser, both in-person (on-campus) and virtually (via Zoom), providing individual and group advising.
  • develop expertise in interpreting University policies, procedures, and curricular requirements.
  • deliver academic advising at New Student Orientation between May to August annually.
  • present at the unit- and University-wide recruitment and matriculation events to large numbers of students and families.
  • participate in unit- and University-wide committees, projects, or initiatives.
  • report to a unit director who encourages professional growth.



Qualifications:

This position will be filled at an advanced or senior level, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for advanced. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher-level jobs.

Advisers in the Division of Undergraduate Studies come from a variety of backgrounds and have varied expertise. This diversity is valued and sought. DUS staff have experience including K-college teaching; residential life; mental-health and school counseling; career advising and DEI support. DUS advisers come from a variety of academic backgrounds including the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts and world languages. We welcome applications from all interested parties. In particular, we would like to strengthen our collective skills in working with neurodiverse students or/and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
