Position Title

Laboratory Supervisor

Position Function

The Lab Supervisor reports directly to the PHS Department Lab Director to achieve the strategic priorities of the Department and the University. The position requires interacting with Assistant Director of Laboratories, lab supervisors, lab technician and graduate instructors with limited interaction with students, faculty, and university staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Responsibilities

  • Maintain Certificate of Fitness certification.

  • Maintain compliance with the Office of Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Protective Agency, NYC Fire Department, and Animal Users in Teaching Laboratory regulations and guidelines.

  • Weekly inspect and maintain documentation of all lab satellite station areas.

  • Ensure that laboratory safety equipment is in working order and personal protective equipment is available to teaching fellows, assistants, students, and visitors.

  • Train and supervise graduate instructors (teaching fellows and assistants) in meeting University lab safety requirements.

  • Review teaching material and address hazards in all teaching lab meetings.

  • Routinely supervise all teaching labs to enforce safe work practices.

  • Manage chemical storage areas for PHS, PHR, Pharmaceutics and Compounding Labs, and any other labs offered by the department.

  • Monitor daily and enforce proper hazardous waste disposal.

  • Ensure graduate instructors comply to lab safety, policies, and procedures

  • Update Safety Data Sheet files as needed

  • Attend to injured or ill students until emergency personnel arrives and report to the Lab Director.

Supervising PHS Graduate Instructors (Teaching Fellows and Graduate assistants)

  • Supervise, train, and monitor graduate instructors in assigned lab courses in use of equipment and lab supplies.

  • Schedule and organize graduate instructors for lab preps, lab review, lab meet and other assigned lab course activities.

  • Prepare lists of tasks and protocols to assist graduate instructors in the lab sessions and lab activities.

  • Communicate changes/updates made by the Lab Director to the instructors.

  • Participate and attend lab meetings and other training activities.

  • Assist in testing and troubleshooting lab activities to ensure lab runs smoothly.

  • Supervise and evaluate graduate instructor performance and participate in the development and promotion process.

Teaching Lab Responsibilities

  • Assist the Lab Director with reviewing and updating teaching lab materials for lab activities and the Learning Management system.

  • Oversee the implementation of protocols and procedures.

  • Supervise and participate in weekly class lab meetings for assigned courses.

  • Prepare and assign graduate instructor tasks for lab preps, lab meetings, and college events.

  • Allocate and provide equipment, computer devices, chemicals, and stationery supplies for assigned lab activities.

  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs of equipment and computer devices.

  • Maintain inventory lists of equipment, computer devices, chemicals, and supplies.

  • Monitor the use of controlled substance chemicals used in the labs.

  • Train, supervise, and ensure all animal protocols are followed during teaching lab activities.

  • Collaborate with the Lab Director to maintain and improve teaching lab rooms and spaces.

  • Work with the Lab Director to provide accommodation to students as per protocols.

  • Proctor and monitor lab quizzes and exams as needed and assist with exam reviews.

Ordering and Maintaining Supplies

  • Maintain and update the list of lab chemicals, equipment, and supplies for assigned lab courses.

  • Maintain records, organize, and store lab materials including chemicals, preserved animals, solutions, reagents, and equipment for purchased and bulk.

  • Determine ordering needs and create a list of materials for purchase and preparation as required for semester lab courses.

  • Conduct a weekly physical inventory of flammables, acid, base, and other corrosive chemicals.

  • Conduct a physical inventory each semester of all chemicals, drugs, hypodermic needles, computer devices, equipment, and supplies.

  • Oversee and maintain non-transplant human specimen as per the SOPs.

Laboratory Maintenance

  • Work with Classroom Support and IT to ensure and set-up classroom digital technology.

  • Maintain and update device software and access.

  • Work with facilities in the maintenance of lab rooms and resolve issues.

Potential Undergraduate Student Responsibilities

  • Assist the Lab Technician in receiving and storing lab materials and maintenance of equipment such as stills and deionizers.

  • Monitor and report student incidents to the Lab Director.


Requirements, skills, and experience

  • A bachelor's in science or a master's in science (preferred);

  • 3-5 years of related experience preferred but not required;

  • Good computer skills with proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, and database entries in the PHSLABS databases and LMS (Canvas);

  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse groups of students, faculty, and support staff;

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;

  • Motivated, focused, and proactive approach;

  • Ability to manage, supervise, and monitor a diverse group of instructors for undergraduate teaching labs;

  • Capacity to work effectively as a team member and participate in improving the lab organization and activities;

  • Capability to follow experimental protocols and test run lab experiments for undergraduate lab activities;

  • Adaptability to a flexible schedule to support lab activities and class schedules;

  • Attendance in professional development functions when required;

  • Readiness to assist the Lab Director with protocols, lab activities, communication, and the resolution of conflicts.


In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $63,000. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
