Job Description Summary:
Maintain mouse and rat colonies for studies on female reproductive development related to ovarian biology. This project will examine the development and regulation of ovarian follicles using mouse and rat models. Perform all animal experiments following standard laboratory procedure as approved by the KUMC IACUC and LAR. The research technician will directly work as instructed by the IACUC and LAR.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma or undergraduate student of biology.
  • Work Experience: 0-1 years of experience in animal research.
  • Skills: Strong work ethic, hardworking and desire to learn. Previous experience with rat and mouse colony management, mouse genetics, rodent ordering, or rodent experiment related materials are required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in biological sciences or related field.
  • Work Experience: 1-2 years of experience in animal research.
  • Skills: Previous experience with rat or mouse dissection, macroscopic and microscopic tissue isolation, oocyte, and other follicular cell isolation from fresh ovaries for genomic and epigenomic works, tissue freezing and tissue embedding is preferred.


Job Duties Outlined:
  • The Animal Researcher maintain mouse and rat colonies.
  • Setting up normal and timed breeding, planning sequential breeding depending on mouse genetics, knock out target genes in experimental rats and mice, and perform genotyping to determine targeted gene knockout.
  • Assist with rat and mouse research-related tasks including recording time of birth, monitoring age, onset of puberty, estrus cyclicity, and other developmental signs of ovarian functions. Administration of necessary drugs and hormones to rats and mice for gene induction or gene knockout, modulation of ovarian functions including steroidogenesis and folliculogenesis.
  • Plan and perform euthanasia to experimental rats and mice of different age groups as required for the developmental studies on hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis.
  • Macroscopic and microscopic harvesting of tissues of HPO axis, tissue processing, and storage for planned experiments including, histology, gene regulation and epigenetic studies.
  • Record data from animal experiments, compile, analyze data for documentation and draw tentative conclusions.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
