VCU Facilities Management is seeking to hire a Building Automation Systems (BAS) Technician. The BAS Technician at VCU must have the ability to work in a variety of conditions and circumstances including office spaces, roofs, basements, crawl spaces, above ceilings, in ducts, off of ladders, scaffolding, and lift equipment; must be able to differentiate between different types and colors of wire and be able to use hand tools, various power tools, meters, laptops, and smartphones; must have proven electro-mechanical aptitude and verifiable experience installing and servicing electronic control or HVAC equipment (3+ years); and must be willing to mentor and train less experienced technicians.
The BAS Technician will monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve problems with automation systems through preventive and corrective maintenance activities. You will diagnose and repair sophisticated building environments and energy management systems utilizing your knowledge and experience. You will test and, if necessary, write modifications in multiple languages of systems software to ensure customer needs are met. You will troubleshoot and support resolution of discrepancies and inconsistencies in the functionality or sequence of operations for automation programs. You will calibrate systems requiring basic electronic test equipment and complete administrative tasks including but not limited to work order documentation, time cards, continuing education, safety training, and project reviews. You will participate in project planning and review processes to ensure automation systems meet VCU standards and customer requirements.
Minimum Hiring Standards
- High school diploma or equivalent GED
- Three (3) years of service experience with HVAC or electronic controls
- Valid State of Virginia Driver's license
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, plans, schematics, specifications, and scopes of work
- Ability to work in a diverse, dynamic, fast-paced, and high stress environment
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
- Journeyman or Master HVAC or Electrician license in the state of Virginia
- Completion of three (3) or more controls vendor (JCI, Siemens, Tridium, ALC) development courses or a recognized controls industry certification (skilled trade license, possession of CCST, CEM, or commissioning agent certification such as the BCxP from ASHRAE)
- Verifiable trades service experience in a research or healthcare setting
- Valid State of Virginia Driver's license
