Position Summary:

The Senior Lab Technician will produce viral vectors using cell culture methods for use by members of the laboratory and research collaborators. The technician will also assist staff and students in the completion of experimental protocols such as tissue processing, histological and immuno-histological staining, PCR, Western blotting and microscopic analysis. The lab technician will also help conduct behavioral experiments in mice to study the role of specific genes in alcohol drinking.

Other jobs include, but are not limited to: ordering supplies, inventory and maintenance of laboratory supplies, routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, monitoring and disposal of biohazardous materials and chemical hazards, and organization of the laboratory environment. Experienced technicians will assist in training students in techniques employed by the laboratory.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Produce viral vectors for use by the laboratory and research collaborators
  • Perform tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, real-time PCR, and Western blots. Assist staff with alcohol drinking and other related behavioral experiments in mice
  • General lab management: bookkeeping for all lab materials including chemical and animal inventories; place order for supplies for all lab personnel; responsible for IACUC and chemical inspections; attending DAR and chemical training and meetings; routine maintenance of lab equipment
Required Hiring Standards:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Neuroscience or related field is required
  • Experience in biology research lab and/or working with lab animals is preferred
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Hiring Standards:
  • Background in Biology or Neuroscience is preferred
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory practices is required for all job duties
